Newborn essentials checklist

Babies need lots of bits and pieces-and making your purchases is one of the most exciting things about being a new mum. When you start your baby shopping, you had think that babies couldn’t manage without endless frilly accessories. But all babies need is their basic needs met-to eat, be kept clean and warm, and to be loved. That needn’t cost a fortune!

Here is a checklist of all the things you will need when your baby is born. 

Diaper changing
  • Cloth or disposable diapers
  • Baby wipes or cotton
  • Safety pins if using cloth diapers
  • Changing mat
  • Nappy rash cream
  • Changing bag for travelling



Baby clothes

Newborn size clothes are worn for such a short time, that there is no use buying them in bulk. If you are a second-timer, you may still have everything you need from last time. Here is a list of what you will need for the initial few months:  
  • Six to eight vests

  • Eight to ten change of clothes

  • Stretch suits if it’s winters

  • Two hats (wollen if winter, cotton if summer)

  • Two cardigans if it’s winter

  • Two pair of mittens and socks if it’s winter

  • A shawl or blanket to wrap the baby in when travelling

  • An all-in-one coat for going out if it's winter

  • Booties

Bathing and changing 

  • Baby bath

  • Baby toiletries i.e. baby soap, baby lotion, baby shampoo

  • Bath sponge
  • Baby towel and a flannel or cloth

  • Baby nail scissors

  • Baby hair brush

  • Top and tail bowl for initial few weeks

  • Bath support made of foam or fabric


Breast feeding

  • Nursing bras

  • Breast pads

  • Breast pump
  • Nipple cream: check with your doctor first


Bottle feeding

  • Bottles: at least 6 bottles
  • Sterilising equipment and sterilising tablets or liquid
  • Bottle brush
  • Bibs: about 6 to 10
  • Infant formula milk


  • Pram or push chair
  • Baby carrier (optional)
  • Rear-facing infant car seat
  • Shawl/ blanket (if it's winters)

Other optional accessories

  • Baby bouncer
  • Bassinet or crib or cot
  • Mobile for cot
  • Paciifers
  • Rattles
